I have a new obsession: Steven Alan. His assortment and stores are amazing. The Boston location just opened in the last few weeks, and I have been making an online wish list ever since. One of my favorite brands that I spotted in store was Artemis. Designed by Boston local, Milicent Armstrong, the pieces are a perfect addition to any wardrobe.
The Valente: What inspired you to start Artemis Design?
Milicent Armstrong of Artemis: I have always had a passion for traveling and experiencing other cultures. I travelled to Istanbul on a buying trip for my mother’s store- Galatea Fine Jewelry in Milton, and became enamored with the beautiful textiles that are overflowing out of every Bazaar. This led me to investigate textile traditions and accessory design, and though not knowing it at the time Artemis Design Co. was born out of that experience.
V: What is the process behind creating one of your bags?
MA: I am always thinking about what the next bag or shoe will look like, and I use the materials as a guide. Silk, Kilim, and velvet all feel and bend very differently, and therefore some materials are better for different items. I usually have many different samples made and try them out for a little while. This tells me which bags are the most comfortable to use, complimentary to the wearer, and beautiful to look at.
MA: It is really a special place. The team of artisans work very carefully when hand making each shoe and bag, putting lot of care into the process. There are always trays of apple tea and Turkish coffee being passed around.
V: What new products can we expect to see from Artemis Design Co in the future?
MA: I’m in the process of developing my next collection, which will be rich with beautiful materials in classic and easy to wear shapes. For the fall I am using rich velvets, silks, and Kilim in earth tones with pops of bright color. I see Artemis Design Co. evolving into a womenswear and lifestyle brand in the future.
